Laura’s story

Laura's story

"You just have to have love and patience. You can build the other skills you need."

A woman and a girl share a meal.

Laura knew she wanted to foster from the age of 19. When she moved in with a friend, her friend’s mum lived a few doors away and had a foster daughter. “She was the sweetest little girl and had had a hard start in life,” Laura recalls. “She stayed with her foster carer until she was adopted.”

That experience stayed with her. “I always said, when I’m able to, I will become a foster carer.”

Watching a child thrive

For Laura, the most rewarding moment has been seeing her foster daughter’s
transformation. “The moment she didn’t have to live in fight or flight mode, she became very calm,” she says. “It’s been such a joy watching her thrive.”

Her advice to you

If you’re thinking about fostering but aren’t sure you have what it takes, Laura’s message is simple.

“You can. You just have to have love and patience. You can build the other skills you need.”
