Your journey to becoming a foster carer

Your journey to becoming a foster carer

Every step of your fostering journey is supported. Here is what to expect. The process can take up to 8 months but can vary by region. Some steps may happen in a different order or at the same time. Your local fostering service will guide you through.

Step 1 – Getting started

Ready to find your local fostering service? Use our postcode checker to get in touch with a service near you. There is no commitment, just a conversation.

Step 2 – Preparation course

Once you have been in touch, your fostering service will invite you to a Skills to Foster preparation course. The timing varies by service, so they will let you know when this takes place.

Step 3 – Background checks

All adults aged 18 and over in your home will need an enhanced DBS check. It is a standard background check that helps keep children safe.

Step 4 – Assessment

A social worker will visit your home to get to know you and what you can offer a child. The assessment has two stages:

Stage 1 covers practical information about your home and circumstances.

Stage 2 explores your background, skills, and what you can offer a child.

Both stages can run at the same time.

Step 5 – Fostering panel

An independent panel reviews your assessment and makes a recommendation about your application.

Step 6 – The decision

A senior manager reviews the panel recommendation and makes the final decision. Your fostering service will let you know the outcome.
